Frequently Asked Questions

Is PAT Testing a Legal Requirement?

The Government requires all landlords, businesses and self-employed contractors to make sure that their portable electrical appliances are safe and suitable.

The UK Health and Safety Executive along with insurance companies will expect you to perform PAT testing. Not complying with the mentioned regulations can result in fines up to £5,000 - £20,000. So even though PAT testing itself is not legally required, it simply helps you to protect yourself by ensuring that you are complying with these regulations.

What is a Portable Appliance?

The word portable can be misleading. There are actually 7 categories of appliance which should be considered for PAT testing: fixed, stationary, IT, movable, portable, cables/charges and hand held appliances.

How often should PAT Testing be carried out?

This depends on the type of business and class of appliances. This ranges between 6 and 48 months.

Do you provide a certificate?

Yes, of course. We will provide detailed and suitable certification for your own reference and insurance companies.

I am a builder, do my tools need to be tested?

To comply with Health and Safety standards, a contractor may not be legally allowed onto the site if their tools don't comply with regulations and the sites insurance needs. The same can happen with a tradesman in the sense that if they haven't had equipment that they use on site tested, then they may not qualify for an insurance claim if any accidents happen due to the electrical safety of the equipment.
